Turnpike Multi User Setup Turnpike Multi-User Setup Before going ahead with multi-user setup, please ensure that you are using Turnpike Six 6.07 or later. The free version of Turnpike is sufficient if you only use Demon Internet access. Customers wishing to use Turnpike with an alternative ISP must also purchase a Turnpike Universal License to obtain a Site ID. The instructions on this page are not applicable to Turnpike Six 6.06 or earlier versions, because you will also need a corresponding concurrent user Site-Key to hand. This is no longer available for purchase as it is not required for Turnpike Six 6.07 or later. Customers with Turnpike 5 and in possession of a Site-Key (the old Turnpike Multi-user licence) should follow the instructions at http://www.demon.net/helpdesk/technicallibrary/turnpike/tpmu/5.html
If you wish to install Turnpike Six on a LAN (Local Area Network), with a copy of Turnpike on each workstation, then you can use the Turnpike Six installer to do this. Simply perform custom installations in order to choose whether Turnpike Connect (and related components) are installed on each particular machine. LAN administrators should note that mail that has been collected by Turnpike can be accessed across the network by other mail reading software with the POP3 or IMAP Server option. Please note that on Turnpike Six 6.06 or earlier versions, only one user can have access at a time unless you have Concurrent Multi-user Access (this restriction does not apply on Turnpike Six 6.07).
At the server Run the Turnpike Six installer on your central server and install at least Turnpike and Connect, and DUN if required. The mail and news databases will be located on the server. The usual Turnpike Initial Setup will follow. Configure Users Run Turnpike on the server to create a New User for each workstation user. Refer to New Users and User Properties. You can move the Turnpike database files to a different location on the server if you wish, using the Paths button in the login dialog. Doing this before setting up the workstations will save time. At each workstation Install just Turnpike without Connect by choosing a custom installation. On the Select Components page ensure that Turnpike Six and Turnpike are checked. Also check User Manual and PGP if required. Ensure that Turnpike Connect, Dial-Up Networking and IP InSight are not checked. Complete the Installation wizard. Since there is no Connect here, no Turnpike Initial Setup is needed. Start Turnpike on each workstation Press the Paths button in the login dialog to enter the path by which the workstation accesses the shared Turnpike databases on the server. Enter the appropriate login name, and password if required, for the user of that workstation. For an Upgrade or Migration Installation Assuming you already have a working Turnpike Six (or earlier Turnpike) networked system, then perform just the installations, as above, on the server then on the workstations. The mail and news database rebuilds for Migration will only be completed once you have followed the server installation. Please note: It is recommended that the server and all of the workstations are always upgraded to the same version of Turnpike Six. Mixing versions could cause problems. You can Modify, Repair or Remove on individual workstations, if required, without any effects elsewhere. You should not add Connect to any workstations, however. |
