Windows WS_FTP Setup

( Note: This software is not supported by our Helpdesk. )

Please see our Important Notice, we recommend that you read it before you proceed.

WS_FTP is shareware and to use it you will need to purchase a licence.

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) allows you to transfer files between your computer and another one connected to the internet.
Most public FTP servers require you to login, and usually accept a login username of 'anonymous' with the password being your email address.
One of the best places to find the locations of FTP servers is the World Wide Web.

Warning: Transferring files opens your computer up to the possibility of downloading computer viruses. You should always check any software you have downloaded for viruses before using it.

Open WS-FTP by double-clicking on the icon, or choosing it from the Start > Programs > WS FTP.

You should then see a panel similar to the one below.

To transfer files to and from an FTP server:
On loading WS_FTP you will have to create the Demon FTP site profile.
Click on New and enter a Profile Name. This can be anything you wish e.g. Demon FTP.
Then enter the following settings:

  • The Host Name/Address is ftp.demon.net.
  • The User ID is anonymous.
  • The Password is your full email address (username@hostname.demon.co.uk).

Make sure the box for Anonymous login is ticked.
Make sure that the box for Save Pwd is ticked. (This does not need to be ticked, however it would mean typing in your password each time you connect to the server.)

Once these details are correct, click on OK to connect to the FTP site.

To transfer files to and from your Demon Homepages Server (also known as uploading your website):

Then enter the following settings:

  • The Host Name/Address is homepages.demon.co.uk.
  • The User ID is Your Demon hostname.
  • The Password is Your login Password.

Make sure that the box for Save Pwd is ticked. (This does not need to be ticked, however it would mean typing in your password each time you connect to the server)

Once these details are correct, click on OK to connect to the Demon Homepages server.

Once connected to the FTP site you will see two windows.

The window on the left-hand side of the screen shows your Local hard disk, and the window on the right-hand side shows the contents of the Remote Demon FTP site.

You can navigate in either window by double-clicking on the yellow folders. To go up a level, double-click on the arrow at the very top of the window.

Note: It is strongly recommended that you create a directory for downloads and a directory for uploads within the WsFtp directory, or a place of your choosing. This will create a safe directory for all your downloaded/uploaded files, and will make it much easier to differentiate between these files and system files.

There is a large amount of software in the pub folder on the Demon FTP site. Double-click on the folder called pub in the right-hand side window (Remote Directory) to view its contents.

Double-clicking on the pub folder will give a new selection of folders to explore, as you can see above.
Double-clicking on these will take you to the relevant sections of the site and allow you to download software.

To download a file, highlight it as shown above, and then click on the arrow in the middle of the screen that is pointing from right to the left.
The file will then be transferred into the folder on your hard drive that is displayed in the window on the left.

See the screen shot below for guidance.
