Windows 2k email bounce problem

The following advice may be useful in solving the email bounce problem encountered by many Demon customers who are Windows 2000 users.

By default, Demon will attempt to deliver email to your machine via SMTP whenever you connect. If you do not intend to receive email via SMTP (e.g. you are using email software such as Outlook or Outlook Express configured to receive email from Demon via POP3), you MUST ensure the SMTP Service that Windows 2000 may automatically run is disabled. This can be done by the following:

  • Go to: Start > Settings > Control Panel
  • Double click on Administrative Tools
  • Double click on Services.
  • Scroll down to find SMTP Service
  • Right click on it, select Properties
  • On the General tab, change the Startup Type to Disabled.
  • Now click the Stop button.
  • Click on Apply, then OK, and close all windows.

Now you will no longer suffer from email being rejected and bounced back to the sender.

Alternatively you can disable SMTP mail delivery from Demon by using Demon's Webpassword utility.
