Windows Telnet

( Note: This software is not supported by the Demon Helpdesk ).

To start Telnet, click Start > Run > type Telnet, then click OK.

On some OS's (Operating Systems) i.e. NT4, click Start > Programs > Accessories > Telnet

When the Telnet session is open, click Connect > Remote system and a dialog box will appear.

Enter your hostname, the telnet port (default is "Telnet or 23), and finally the TermType (again the default is vt100).

If you collect your mail via POP3, then you can login into Demon's POP3 server to see what mail you have.

Connect to Demon and open a Telnet session.

To open a Telnet session, click on Start > Programs > Accessories > Telnet.

Enter the server name in the Host Name box; in this case pop3.demon.co.uk

Enter 110 in the port box. Note: The normal telnet port is 23.

Select vt100 from the drop-down menu in the Term type box.

Click Connect

Once conected you will get a message similar to:

+OK demon POP3 server ready (demon.co.uk)

Type user hostname and press return/enter, hostname being Your Demon hostname.

The server will reply:
+OK

Type pass password and press return/enter, password being your POP3 password.
The server will reply:
+OK
Then type list and press return/enter
The server will reply:
+OK 2 messages
1 7193
2 96293

To read a message use retr # and press Return/Enter, # being the number of the message.
To delete a message use dele # and press Return/Enter, # being the number of the message.

When you want to quit, just type quit and press Return/Enter.
The server will respond with Connection to host lost

This can also be done from a command line.

From your desktop, click Start > Run and type telnet pop3.demon.co.uk 110

A telnet session will open and you will see the message.
+OK demon POP3 server ready (demon.co.uk)

Similar to the screen shot below.

Type user hostname and press return/enter, hostname being Your hostname.

Type pass password and press return/enter, password being your POP3 password.

You should then see a similar screen to the screen shot below:

You are now logged onto the POP3 server.

All the above commands like dele, list and retr can be used from here.
quit will close the connection to the server and close the telnet session.
Note: Be careful with your typing as you cannot backspace over spelling mistakes etc.
Your first entry will be the only entry it will except, you cannot correct spelling mistakes.
