Internet news

To set up Internet News follow these simple steps:

Click the News option on the toolbar, and select Options.

Click Send tab, in the News sending settings, ensure the following is selected:

When posting, save a copy in ‘Posted Messages’ folder.

When selecting, automatically select entire word.

Include original message in reply.

In the News sending format section, ensure the following is selected:

Plain text.

Indent with this character > when replying to a newsgroup.

Click the Server tab.

Enter your Full Name in the Name field.

See our Names & Password Conventions guide.

Organisation can be left blank.

Enter your email address in the Email Address field and in the Return Address field.

Click Add.

Ensure the News Server Name is news.demon.co.uk, everything else should be blank.
Click on the Connection tab.

Select the option I use a modem to access my newsgroups.

Ensure your Demon Internet Dial-Up Networking connection is selected within the Use the following Dial-Up Networking connection: drop down list.

Select Automatically connect to this server.
Click the Advanced tab.

The News Server port is 119.
The Server Timeout can be set to your own preferences.

Ensure there is a tick to the left of Use newsgroup descriptions option.
Click the Apply button.
Click OK.

Click Yes to subscribe to the newsgroups of your choice.

Enter your hostname in the User Name: box.
Enter your logon password in the Password: box.

Put a tick to the left of the Save Password, this saves the password and negates entering it everytime you check the newsgroups.

Click OK.

The computer will dial and connect to Demon Internet news server.

Once connected Internet News will download a list of the newsgroups that are available from the Demon Internet news server.


On the first connection to the news server it can take a few minuetes to download all the newsgroups available.
It is worth letting Internet News complete this task, as it will try each time you connect until the task is completed.

When it is finished it will display a list of the available newsgroups.

Above you can see a list of newsgroups available for you to subscribe to.

For this example we shall subscribe to demon.announce, type in the Display newsgroup which contain: field, demon.announce .

To subscribe to a newsgroup, highlight demon.announce in the Newsgroups field.

Click the Subscribe button.
To find out which newsgroups you are subscribed to click the Subscribed tab.

Click the drop-down button to the right of the Newsgroups field, this will show all the newsgroups you have subscribed to.
Select the desired newsgroup, for instance demon.announce, this will show all the articles within that newsgroup.
To read an article, double-click on the article.
