Internet Relay chat or IRC as it is commonly known as offers a great way to chat to other Internet users.
You can talk on channels or on a private conversation.
When you load the program you should see the screen below.

The Real Name field can contain your name or if you wish, it can be left blank; however, it is common courtesy to enter something.
The EMAIL field can contain your full email address, but, again, you may leave this blank if you wish; again, it is common courtesy to fill this.
The Nickname and Alternate fields must be completed in order for you to log onto an IRC server.
Each user on an IRC server must have a unique nickname or nick. This is the name by which you are known on the server, and that is why it must be unique.
If your chosen nickname is already in use by someone else, your alternative nickname will be used.
In the case of them both being used by someone else, you must choose two different nicknames until you find one which is not already in use.
You can use Alphanumeric (letters and number) characters up to 9 characters in length.
If the Demon IRC server is not listed then you can add it by clicking on the ADD button, which will take you to the screen below.

In the Description field type Demon IRC.
In the IRC Server field type ircnet.demon.co.uk.
The default Port is 6667, however this can get busy; try using 6665 through to 6669.
The Group and Password fields should be left blank.
Click on Add to return to the previous screen.
Click Ok.

Go to File on the menu bar, select Connect.

Demon's IRC channel is ircnet.demon.co.uk, so we will connect to that for the example.
Enter #demon as the name of the channel to join and click Join to join the channel.
This will join the channel #demon.

Now you are connected you will see a screen that looks like the one above.
On the right you will see a list of Nicknames. Each of those Nicknames is a Demon user.
In the centre is where other users' text appears.
You can also chat; type the words you want to appear in the box at the bottom of the window.
Some IRC Commands:
/join #[channel_name] = Join a channel.
/part #[channel_name] = Leave a channel.
/nick nickname = Change your IRC nickname once online.
