POP3

POP3 is one way of receiving email. POP3 collection enables you to receive mail through any connection to any ISP. Our webmail service is also POP3 (web.mail.demon.net). To use the POP3 service you must have a POP3 password.

If you do not have a POP3 password, you can set one up at :-

(you will need your login password and your hostname)

Demon's mail servers hold your mail for 30 days, after which it will be returned to the sender as non deliverable and deleted from the Demon server.

A default timeout will close the connection after 30 minutes. If new messages arrive during a POP3 session they will not be available until the next session.

You can also choose which user's email you would like to receive, e.g. a user with the address user1@hostname.demon.co.uk can receive mail just for user1.

To achieve this, in the settings of the mail client you must enter user1+hostname or user1@hostname.demon.co.uk in place of the hostname.

You will also have to do the same for user2, user3 etc. Remember, at least one account (for this explanation we will call it the postmaster account) must be able to pick up any mail that is not addressed to a specific user, i.e. non_specific@hostname.demon.co.uk, the postmaster account should also be mirrored, otherwise you could be in the situation where some users will not receive their mail as the postmaster account has already collected it.

To use your account and receive email connecting to Demon Internet, you will need to make sure you have the correct mail server addresses entered into the email client, which are:

Incoming: pop3.demon.co.uk port 110
Outgoing: post.demon.co.uk port 25

To use your account to receive emails using a different ISP or connection you will need to make sure that the following mail servers are set in the configuration of your mail client:

Incoming: pop3.demon.co.uk port 110
Outgoing: The smtp server (outgoing mail server) of the ISP you are using port 25

SMTP

When using SMTP you must dial up and connect to Demon Internet. Once Demon's post servers see that your port 25 is open for connection the servers will kick the mail to you. This will happen within the first two minutes from connecting, after which it will retry every ten minutes. You have no control over this process and cannot choose to collect specific mail, you will always receive all mail for your account name.
